Why are we so dependent on China for mobile phones?

This is a sad reality where we don't have a lot of options other than Chinese brands in smart phones as of 2020. The only other players in the market are ASUS (Tiwan based multinational company), Samsung (Korean Tech Giant), LG (One more Korean Tech Giant) and lets not forget Apple (American company).

And there are some notable companies like Nokia which was the superstar of an era, and Sony with their innovation paved way for other smartphone brands to take lead.

Even then all these companies were and still are extensively dependent on the Chinese for manufacturing, assembling and also since some components are exclusively manufactured in China.

Now lets take a look at all the Chinese mobile brands:

  1. Xiaomi

  2. Oppo

  3. Vivo

  4. OnePlus

  5. Realme

  6. Huawei

  7. Lenovo

  8. LeEco

So, what common among all these brands. They offer top of the line specs for dirt cheap price. So the only competition lies among themselves.

And one shocking fact what most of us do not know is "BBK Electronics is the parent company of Oppo, Vivo, Realme, OnePlus and iQOO"

So one company (BBK electronics) makes all the profit while its sub brands are the only real competition they have.

Now coming to the point : Why people in India prefer these Chinese brands over any other?

Lets take an example:

The latest released OnePlus 8 have flagship specification and the best comparison is Samsung Galaxy S20 .

OnePlus 8 price : 41000 Rupees

Samsung s20 : 68000 Rupees

This says a lot doesn't it.

And for a long time Mi smartphones have been the peoples go to brand for smartphones.

They provide good build quality smartphones which really competes with good specs.

But how the compensate for providing their lower end and mid range smart phones is by creeping in semi-pornographic ( without even considering kids may use the phone ) ads in the phones and some apps which cannot be deleted. And also the ads are not easy to disable.

People still opt for it for the price and specs. (Sad reality)

The Indian market is always price conscious. And one more reason for this is smart phone brands of India which were once a major hit, started to cheap out on the build quality.

The only way we can stop this kind of Chinese dominance of consumer electronics in India is

1. To have an OEM/ODM manufacturing units in India so that we would need to import components from China to manufacture in India.

2. A new brand in India should come up with a better solution to produce quality products at competitive price.

3. Most importantly some of the Indian YouTube mass influencers must stop shamelessly marketing these Chinese branded smartphones (Considering the situation with China).

I also owned a OnePlus smartphone and somehow i feel guilty and shamed to have owned it.

One more reason we prefer Chinese brands over our own is because, lets be honest our brands are not that good either. Most of them still get their manufacturing done in China because its cheaper.

The Smart phone brands in India should know better and use this opportunity to make a good come back and provide Quality products which the citizens of India would feel confident to invest in.

These are just my personal thoughts and not ad driven.

Support "Make in India."

Support Good quality products of Indian market.

We have the potential to be the next Tech Giant in the global market.
